1920’s

After the unspeakable horror of the Great War in the previous decade it's not surprising that the exuberance of the survivors made this decade the Roaring 20's - a time when new ideas and hedonistic pleasure where pursued with equal enthusiasm.
During the war women had been encouraged to do jobs vacated by men then at the Front and their dress had become considerably less cumbersome and more practical. The corset was still worn but now as more of a support garment rather than something that contorted the female form into a shape seen as fashionable so that women were experiencing a new freedom of physical movement.

By 1918 some women had the vote in Great Britain, although full female franchise did not come into effect until 1928.

In the 1920's hemlines which had been ankle length in the previous decade rose to just below the knee, women were cutting their hair into fashionable bobs and soon the French fashion houses were demanding that women looked boyish and slender without the rich curves so beloved of the Edwardians. The diet was born!
